The Department of English offers a number of tuition waivers as well as cash awards for students currently attending the University of Utah as English or English Teaching majors. We also offer one tuition waiver (Snow-Angleman Scholarship) for an incoming first-year student who plans to declare English as his or her major.
Applications for incoming first-year students are available through the Financial
Aid and Scholarship Office web site (http://www.sa.utah.edu/finance/). This application must be sent directly to the Department of English along with
letters of recommendation, transcripts, and test scores. The deadline for this scholarship
is February 1, 2017.
2017-2018 Department of English Undergraduate Scholarships
The deadline for continuing student scholarships is March 3, 2017.
Eligibility: University of Utah tuition waivers require a minimum 3.500 cumulative and minimum 3.500 g.p.a. in all English coursework . All other scholarships require a minimum 3.000 cumulative g.p.a. as well as a minimum 3.000 g.p.a. in all English coursework. Applicants must also be English or English Teaching majors and have completed at least 6 credit hours of English coursework (WRTG courses DO NOT count). As these scholarships will be issued for the 2017-2018 academic year, students graduating in or before August 2017 are also not eligible.
Prior to completing the online application process, applicants should gather all information and materials required. These include:
- The student’s cumulative g.p.a., English major g.p.a., and completed credit hours. Most of this data is readily available on the student’s degree audit (DARS). For assistance in calculating major g.p.a., see: http://advising.utah.edu/academic-standards/calculation.php.
- The names and e-mail addresses of two faculty members or instructors who have agreed to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf. You will need to submit a completed “Permission to Release Education Record Information” to each of your recommenders. This form can be found here: http://leap.utah.edu/docs/ltr_recom.pdf. For “Recipient Name”, please list “University of Utah Department of English Undergraduate Scholarship Selection Committee” (you do not need to complete the address, phone number, or e-mail boxes in this section). Your recommenders will be contacted to submit their recommendations by the department after the scholarship application period closes; they do not have to have their recommendations completed by the scholarship application deadline.
- A written statement that describes your academic interests and achievements, your career plans, and your financial needs in completing your studies (no more than 7,000 characters including spaces—roughly 2 pages) as well as a critical writing sample of no more than 20,000 characters including spaces—roughly 5 pages. A creative sample, also no longer than 20,000 characters including spaces, may be included in addition to the critical writing sample.

Applicants will be notified of results in April.
